Caloundra's houses

During our stay in a friend's house in Caloundra, in addition to the quite luxurious facilities, we also enjoyed the lush view.

Our friend's house was typical of houses in the newer developments in Caloundra. I remember as a kid being driven around that area in my Dad's HR Holden on the new dirt/unsealed roads. When we moved to Caloundra many years ago, the population was about 3000. We lived up the hill from King's Beach with a view of the water, the Perle Hotel (now renamed as the Kings Beach Tavern) and the ambulance station. At night the Caloundra Lighthouse shined its beam into our bedrooms. At Kings Beach, most people lived in houses similar to the one below, or houses made of similar materials.

We lived in this brick house. As you can see it is bravely defying the onward march of re-development. When I was a kid, we could stand on the front verandah and see the ocean at Kings Beach. I remember seeing ships on their way to and from the
Port of Brisbane, the occasional submarine, and yachts taking part in the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race. That view is now obscured by a great heaps of bricks, not unlike the now neighboring building.

The old houses in good locations (i.e. view of the ocean) have tended to be replaced by buildings like this.

But some innovative types have, in some instances, taken to modernizing the old fisherman's shacks and holiday houses in preference to demolition and re-building. In this instance, the results from the renovation are quite striking.
